FG raises N585m to pay fines for inmates

  The Federal Government has commenced the release of 4,068 inmates languishing in correctional facilities across the country over the inability to pay fines. The government said N585 m was raised by cooperate bodies as Corporate Social Responsibility for that purpose. Speaking during the flag-off of the programme on Saturday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the initiative is part of the efforts to decongest prisons in the country. He said, “It’s with great pleasure that I stand with you today to flag off the release of 4,068 inmates sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with the option of fine and compensation in custodial status nationwide. This is in a bid to decongest custodial centres as well as make ready proper reformation and rehabilitation of offenders to take place. Policeman, five others injured in Osun community Obaship tussle

  Six persons have been injured in Eko-Ende, Ifelodun Local Government Area, Osun State as suspected arsonists launched an attack on Wednesday. Nigerian Tribune gathered that A Chartered Accountant, Adekunle AbdulWaheed Babatunde was elected as the Oba of Eko-Ende. FRSC asks motorists to prioritise safety during yuletide

  The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged road users to prioritise safety as they ply the road before, during and after the yuletide. Liberian President George Weah Concedes Poll Defeat To Ex-VP Boakai

  Liberian leader and football legend George Weah conceded defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai after a tight presidential run-off, saying it was “time to put national interest above personal interest”. The latest and nearly complete results showed Boakai leading with nearly 51 percent of the votes in Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic founded by freed American slaves. “The results announced tonight, though not final, indicate that… Boakai is in a lead that we cannot surpass,” Weah said in a speech on national radio late on Friday. He said his CDC party “has lost the election but Liberia has won,” adding: “This is the time for graciousness in defeat”.
