Naira strengthens to N806.73/$ at official market, stable on parallel window

  Nigeria’s Naira strengthened to N806. 73 to the dollar at the official foreign exchange (FX) market on Tuesday, as against N837.77 to the greenback which it closed at, on Monday. Dealers said the local currency’s appreciation followed a moderation in dollar demand at the official foreign exchange market. At the close of trading on Monday, the dollar was quoted at N837.77, stronger than N927.19 quoted on Friday at the Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), data from the FMDQ indicated. Advertisement Willing buyers and willing sellers quoted dollars at a bid rate of N1,021, stronger than N1,160/$1 offered on Friday as the higher bid rate on the spot trading. The lower bid rate remained steady at N701 per dollar on the spot. Dollar supply decreased on Monday as the daily foreign exchange market turnover dropped by 32.87 percent to $73.93 million from $110.14 million recorded on Friday. Gunmen Attack INEC REC In Kogi

  The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says gunmen have attacked the residence of its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lokoja, Kogi State. The commission in a communique made available to Channels Television, said the attack happened around 3:30 am today, Friday, December 1, 2023. West African leaders meet amid coup scare

West African leaders will hold a summit later this month as the region struggles to reverse a series of coups and contain jihadist conflicts in the Sahel. The Economic Community of the West African States will meet in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on December 10, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara’s office said in a statement after talks with ECOWAS chiefs. The leaders last met in August for talks on Niger after a July 26 coup there which overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum. He has since been sequestered in his residence in Niamey. ECOWAS heads of state threatened military intervention as a last resort to restore Bazoum and imposed heavy economic sanctions on Niger, now ruled by a military regime led by General Abdourahamane Tiani. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is current chair of ECOWAS, says back-channel talks are still ongoing with the Niger regime.

BREAKING: Old, New Naira Notes To Co-Exist Till Further Notice, Supreme Court Rules

  The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered that the old N200, N500, N1000 notes should continue to co-exist with the new notes till further notice. The apex court ruled that both old and new notes should continue to remain legal tender until the Federal Government put a process in place for its replacement or redesign after due consultation with relevant stakeholders. Mid-November, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had said the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes would remain legal tender indefinitely.   The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Command, has handed over a $54,330 bribe offered to the command by importers of tramadol tablets to the Lagos Zonal Commander of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Michael Wekas. The command announced this in a statement on Tuesday. The Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Dera Nnadi, while handing over the money, reiterated the zero tolerance for corruption stance of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. COVID-19 Funds: Reps Begin Full Probe, Warn MDAs Against ‘Delay Tactics’

  The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House of Representatives, on Monday, began a full-scale probe into the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 intervention funds from 2020 to 2023 as mandated by the House at the plenary session. Addressing the opening session, the Chairman of the Committee, Bamidele Salam (PDP-OSUN), warned that the committee would not entertain delay tactics from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies by way of asking for an extension of time. “The committee is probing over 60 MDAs over several billions of naira in intervention funds allocated to them during the COVID-19 pandemic and we have given them enough time to prepare for this exercise,” he said. “The committee will not entertain any extension of time from any of the MDAs.
