Ban ki-moon, a South Korean politician and diplomat who served as the eighth secretary-general of the United Nations between 2007 and 2016 shared his intention while addressing world leaders on economic development that " Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all. It offers a framework to generate economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship and strengthen governance" 


Governor Seyi Makinde has a keen understanding of the crucial role that economic growth, socio-economic development, responsible stewardship, and good governance play in fostering a prosperous and sustainable society, and is committed to leveraging these elements to drive progress and enhance the well-being of the citizens of Oyo State.


His administration  in Oyo State has achieved remarkable milestones, spearheading economic development that has garnered immense admiration. By harnessing the potential of agribusiness and forging strategic partnerships with private entities and development agencies, his leadership has generated outstanding outcomes, showcasing a model of effective governance that has raised the bar for economic transformation in the region.


Makinde has made sound Investment in infrastructure development to accommodate the growing population, creating jobs in both formal and informal sectors. Regular payment of salaries and pensions, injecting funds into the economy; attracting private investments of over N27 billion in agribusiness alone over three years. His administration has made Ibadan to be ranked as the second fastest-growing city in Africa, according to a UN-Habitat research.

The forthcoming upgrade of Ibadan Airport to an international airport, greenlit by President Bola Tinubu and championed by Governor Seyi Makinde, is poised to have a transformative impact on the region. The upgrade is expected to spur economic growth in Oyo State, fostering increased economic development and propelling the state towards greater prosperity. Additionally, the airport's new international status is anticipated to strengthen regional integration, further solidifying Ibadan's position as a hub of commerce and connectivity. The upgrade will also entail the expansion of the runway and the construction of a brand-new terminal, providing a significant boost to the state's economy and cementing its status as a key driver of growth in the region.


The project is expected to have a substantial impact on the economy of Oyo State, generating significant growth and development opportunities. In a demonstration of his administration's commitment to collaboration and excellence, Governor Makinde has engaged with Air Force personnel to ensure that the project meets the highest operational standards, showcasing his government's appreciation for the military's expertise and dedication to the nation's security.


The upgrade of Ibadan airport to international one is a key component of a comprehensive development strategy, which includes the establishment of an industrial estate in the Rashidi Ladoja GRA, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This estate is anticipated to attract numerous businesses, including multinational corporations. 


Furthermore, Shell Nigeria Gas has collaborated with Oyo State to develop a gas distribution network, providing natural gas to industries and manufacturers. This network is strategically situated near the Pressure Reduction & Metering Station (PRMS) along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and adjacent to the Rashidi Ladoja GRA. Additionally, the ongoing construction of the 110km circular road is expected to accommodate a mega industrial zone, further solidifying the state's position as a hub for industrial growth and economic development."


Governor Seyi Makinde's tenure in Oyo State has been a resounding success, marked by a laser-like focus on economic development that has garnered widespread acclaim. By harnessing the potential of the newly upgraded Ibadan International Airport, his administration will achieve more outstanding outcomes, which will transform the state's economic landscape and leaving a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations to come.
