Tinubu Names 11 NPC Commissioners, Reappoints Nine

  President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, appointed 20 Nigerians to serve as Federal Commissioners in the National Population Commission (NPC). Nine current of the Commissioners were re-appointed for second term in office while 11 others were newly appointed. In a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, the President charged the new and returning NPC Commissioners to “successfully implement all measures taken by his administration to produce and effectively appropriate accurate population data with which lasting solutions to Nigeria’s socio-political and economic challenges can be conclusively developed and executed”. Just in: Tinubu signs N2.17trn supplementary budget

  President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Budget into law.  The National Assembly had about a week ago passed the bill and subsequently transmitted it to the president for his assent.  Tinubu signed the bill in his office at the presidential villa in Abuja at a ceremony witnessed by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abass. Others present at the signing ceremony were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; and Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji; Senate Leader, Sen Opeyemi Bamidele; and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Sen Olamilakan Adeola. EFCC Bows To Order, Produces Emefiele In Court

  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has bowed to the order of the court by producing the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, in court for the hearing of his bail application. Emefiele who has been in the custody of Security agencies for over 149 days, was ordered by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, to be released unconditionally or be brought to hear his application for bail. Dressed in a yellow Kaftan and a cap and flanked by operatives of the EFCC, the former CBN Governor arrived at the courtroom at about 12:30 pm. Justice Adeniyi had on Monday, reaffirmed his order that the detained former CBN Governor be brought to court today November 8, for the purpose of admitting him to bail. At the resumed hearing, counsel to Emefiele, Mathew Burkaa, applied that his client be admitted to bail on liberal terms, having been in the custody of security agencies for 151 days. IGP Restricts Movement In Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi On Election Day

  The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the restriction of vehicular movement in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states during governorship elections scheduled to hold on November 11, 2023. Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the restriction would be effective from 12:01am to 6pm on Saturday in the three states.                   Advertisement Adejobi, however, added that those on essential services are exempted from the restriction on election day.   The naira crashed against the dollar on Monday, falling to 1, 030/$ on the average in the parallel market, losing the momentum it gathered last week. This represents a N80 loss or a 8.42 per cent decline of the local currency compared to the N950 it closed the week at last Friday. This is also the first time the naira is falling since the Central Bank of Nigeria began to clear some of its FX backlog last week.Currency traders, also known as Bureaux De Change operators said that the naira was trading at between N990 to N1,030/$.                         Advertisement A trader who gave his name as Awolu said, “The dollar is N995 if you want to sell. Hardship: Workers, pensioners to get 25,000 and N15,000 cash award for six months- Makinde

  Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Monday, declared that workers and pensioners in the state would receive a monthly cash award of N25,000 and N15,000 respectively for the next six months. He noted, however, that the workforce and the people of the state would have to work with the state government to develop the economy of the state for the long term, as according to him, once there is economic prosperity in the state, everyone would be touched.                  The governor stated this when he addressed the workers at the frontage of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, during a solidarity rally.   A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, dismissed the allegations of forgery of a discharge certificate brought against the Enugu State Governor, Barrister Peter Mbah, by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).                           Advertisement The trial Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo threw away the allegations following the inability of the Corps to prove and defend the allegations as required by law. The judge, in a judgment in a suit by the governor against the NYSC, imposed a fine of N5 million on the NYSC to be paid jointly to the plaintiff for suppressing facts and conspiring against him in the heinous allegations.                          Advertisement The court held that with the unchallenged evidence of the plaintiff on how the discharge certificate was issued to him in 2003 by NYSC after serving in a law firm in Lagos and the inability of the Corps to come up with counter-evidence, it was crystal clear that the plaintiff served the mandatory one-year service.

Lagos Shuts Ogba City Mall, Ajah Market Over ‘Waste Disposal Offences’

  The Lagos State Government has sealed the Ajah Market and Ogba City Mall over what it described as “waste disposal offences”.  This is according to a Monday statement from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). “The Lagos State Government has shut Ogba City Mall, Ikeja, and Ajah Market, Etti-Osa, for sundry waste disposal offences,” LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs Folashade Kadiri said in the statement. “The action was carried out by the combined enforcement teams of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA; State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, LASTMA and LAGSEC (KAI).” The LAWMA spokesperson added that the enforcement team also cleared shanties and illegal traders’ structures around the Ajah BRT corridor, and Ajah Jubilee Bridge on Sunday.
