  Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, says the judgements of the appellate court sacking Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State should be reviewed because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed in its duty to conduct proper elections in the country. Falana, who spoke on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, said the votes of Nigerians should not be nullified by the courts because of the supposed negligence of the electoral umpire that shouldn’t have cleared candidates put forward by parties without primaries conducted. He also said thousands of votes should not be invalidated by the court because INEC officials failed to stamp ballot sheets. According to the senior lawyer, election matters should be concluded before the inauguration of any administrations.   The Federal Government has commenced the release of 4,068 inmates languishing in correctional facilities across the country over the inability to pay fines. The government said N585 m was raised by cooperate bodies as Corporate Social Responsibility for that purpose. Speaking during the flag-off of the programme on Saturday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the initiative is part of the efforts to decongest prisons in the country. He said, “It’s with great pleasure that I stand with you today to flag off the release of 4,068 inmates sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with the option of fine and compensation in custodial status nationwide. This is in a bid to decongest custodial centres as well as make ready proper reformation and rehabilitation of offenders to take place.   The Federal Government has arraigned the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, on a six-count charge bordering on alleged procurement. The original charge, which was 20 counts to the tune of N6.5 billion, has been reduced to six, to the tune of N1.6 billion. Emefiele is the only defendant in the new charge. The former CBN governor appeared in court on Friday for an application for bail, pleading not guilty to the six-count charge after it was read to him. Emefiele arrived just in time for the commencement of the day’s proceedings. According to the amended charge sheet, the charges still border on procurement fraud. The Federal Government alleged that Emefiele illegally bought 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020 worth N1.2 billion. He was also accused of awarding a contract for the procurement of 37 Toyota Hilux Vehicles valued at N854 million.
